Charging of cell phone battery is a big problem while travelling as power supply source is not generally accessible. If you keep your cellphone switched on continuously, its battery will go flat within five to six hours, making the cell phone useless. A fully charged battery becomes necessary especially when your distance from the nearest relay station increases.Here is a simple charger that replenishes the cellphone battery within two to three hours.
Basically the charger is a current limited voltage source. Generally, cellphone battery packs requires 3.6-6v DC and 180-200mA current for charging . These usually contain three NiCd cells, each having 1.2V rating. Current of 100mA is sufficient for charging the cellphone battery at a alow rate. A 12v battery containing pen cells gives sufficient current (1.8A) to charge the battery connected across the out-put terminals. The circuit also monitors the voltage level of the battery. It automatically cuts off the charging process when its output terminal voltage increases above the predetermined voltage level.
Timer IC NE555 is used in this circuit and it acts as the heart of circuit. This circuit is designed in such a way that when the cell phone battery is in discharged state and when the voltage at trigger pin (2) of NE555 is below 1/3 Vcc then the cell phone battery is automatically charged because the flipflop in the IC is switched ON. When the cell phone battery is fully charged and the voltage at pin(6) goes above 2/3 Vcc then the charging process is terminated.
In this the components used are few resistors, capacitors,zenor diode,LED, one transistor, one switch, a DC Battery and a cell phone battery.
